Tiffany pulls into the parking lot of a car hire company and takes in the scene. Twenty, thirty cars, all second-hand. It’s a business on a shoestring. Probably an older guy running it, maybe with his wife. It’s not Hertz or Rent-A-Car, that’s for sure. Probably used by older locals who have given up their family car. More economical to hire a vehicle on the rare occasions they need one.

She pulls two suitcases from the boot and makes her way to the portable cabin, substituting as a business headquarters. An old-fashioned bell rings as she walks in. An elderly gentleman behind the counter reluctantly raises his head, slightly annoyed that his sixth customer of the week has walked in to disturb his peace.

‘Hello, I wish to hire a car for two days,’ Tiffany says with effervescence and energy. ‘But I’d also like to ask a small favour.’

The man puts his paper down and slides his spectacles onto the bridge of his nose.

‘Oh, aye?’ he asks suspiciously. He’s not in the habit of handing out favours.

‘I live in Whitehaven and set off not more than thirty minutes ago to visit my ailing father in Edinburgh. He’s in a hospice. It’s inevitable… but still,’ she adds as crocodile tears drill down her cheeks. ‘It doesn’t make it any easier.’

The old man’s face softens. ‘So how can I help?’

‘Well,’ she sniffles as she dabs a tissue at her eyes, ‘I noticed a peculiar sound coming from my car. A rumble and a clank. I thought I’d be okay because I’ve been a member of the AA for over ten years… then I remembered… I’d let my renewal lapse. I don’t want to take a chance on the car breaking down, so thought it best to hire a car. But I don’t want to leave mine parked up on the roadside.’

She loosens the tap on the tears.

‘There, there, calm yourself, lass. Don’t go getting yourself all worked up over nothing.’

Another pat at her cheeks, then the eyes, followed by the beguiling damsel in distress smile.

‘You’re so kind. All I want is to hire a roadworthy car from you that will take me from here to Edinburgh… and I wondered if I could leave my car in your compound until I return? The palliative care nurse told me it will be two days, maximum, if I’m lucky.’

The man pats the back of Tiffany’s hand, which has been deliberately left on the countertop.

‘I tell you what, lass, I’ll give you my best car. A BMW Mini Cooper—2010 model. She’s a beauty. Plenty of storage for one. A great handler and you’ll look like the bees’ knees. It’s a pleasure to drive. And of course you can leave your car here. It will be safe in the compound until you return.’

He turns and stares at a plethora of keys hanging from hooks.

‘You’re too kind,’ she sniffs.

‘Here we go,’ he says, grabbing a set of keys. ‘Now I just need your driver’s licence, and a bank or credit card and you’ll be on your way.
